　人間活動と環境・空間・地域との関係について考える学問である人文地理学を専門にしています。人文地理学の関心や研究テーマは多岐にわたりますが、私は主に廃棄物問題に関心をもって研究を続けています。廃棄物に関する研究は工学・経済学・行政学などで行われているイメージがあり、人文地理学からのアプローチは意外に思われるかもしれません。しかし、どのような地域で3Rが進んでいるのか、廃棄物問題はどこで起きているのか、持続可能な地域社会のために廃棄物をどのように管理すればよいのか、など、廃棄物に関する研究や課題解決に人文地理学が貢献できる部分は少なくないと考えています。
　教育に関しては、地理教育・社会科教育の面から教員養成にかかわることはもちろんのこと、身近な地域（ローカル）から世界全体（グローバル）までのマルチスケールな視点から私たちが抱える課題をとらえ、そうした課題に主体的に取り組むことができる人を育てたいと考えています。
　研究・教育双方のフィールドとして、近年は離島地域、とくに島根県隠岐地域とのかかわりを強めています。人口減少・超高齢化などが進む「課題先進地域」がサスティナブルであるためにはどうすればよいのか、生活・環境・教育などさまざまな視角から、学生らとともに考えたいと思います。
