おもに大学教育を研究対象にしています。これまでは、アメリカの大学における学習者の基礎リテラシー、なかでも文章表現力の育成に焦点を当てて研究を進めてきました。大学における高度な学びのための基盤能力形成の視点から、大学１年生を対象とした初年次教育プログラムのなかで、学習者の基礎リテラシーをどのように育成するのかについて調査研究をおこなっています。また、現在導入が進んでいるアクティブラーニング型の授業を通じて、学習者が論理的に考える力や物事を感じ取る力を主体的に身につけたり、他者と生産的な関係を築く力を高めたりするためには、どのような学びの場を作ることが効果的であるのかについて検討を進めています。
