私は日本および東アジアの都市空間や地域空間の歴史を建築から考える研究、また近現代日本の建築史研究をしています。現在は第二次世界大戦後の復興期に日本全国の駅前などの市街地に、闇市として生まれた「マーケット」という建物の形成過程を空間的に明らかにするとともに、闇市が整理される過程で市街地の中心的な商業空間となっていった「民衆駅」について研究しています。この時期、視野を日本の外へ広げれば、現在の国境をまたいで東アジアの中で多くの人口が移動しており、それを起因として都市空間の一部が劇的に変化しています。闇市は日本でのひとつの現れですが、台湾や韓国でも同時代的に再編された都市空間を捉える研究を展開しつつあります。
こうした研究は現代の都市空間の基層を明らかにするものであり、これからの都市や建築を構想する上でアイデアのもととなる重要な知見となります。
他方で、関西学院大学の校舎も多く手がけているW.M.ヴォーリズの設計した国際基督教大学のキャンパスと教員住宅について研究を進めています。今後は関西学院大学のキャンパスについての建築史研究を進めていきます。
