金属イオンと有機分子(配位子)からなる金属錯体は、分子設計しだいで明るくカラフルに光ることから次世代の発光材料として注目されています。特に、白金(II)錯体や銅(I)錯体などの一部の金属錯体は分子の形や分子どうしの相互作用によって発光を赤から緑、青までカラフルに変化させられることが特徴です。
私は、この性質を活かし蒸気(水蒸気、有機溶媒蒸気)や温度変化、引っかきなどの外部環境の変化を受けて発光を鋭敏に変化させる、センサーとしての金属錯体の開発に注目しています。このような性質を自由に設計するためには、分子どうしの非常に弱い相互作用を操らないといけません。しかし、弱い相互作用は設計が難しいため、これまでは合理的な設計の方針が少ないことが問題でした。
そこで、分子どうしの相互作用を狙い通りに設計し、環境の変化を映し出す発光センサーとしての金属錯体を合理的に設計することを目的に研究を進めています。また、最近ではこのようなセンシング機能と磁性などの物性を連動させることも狙っています。この研究を進めることで、センサーのみならず光電子デバイスなどにも展開できる多機能性発光材料の開発に貢献したいと考えています。
