軌道上や惑星上で機能する宇宙機やステーション，空を飛翔する飛行機は，機能的であることに加えて自律的であることが必要です．そのためにどのようなかたちやしくみがあればよいかを考え，新しい構造物を提案することを目指しています．とくにアンテナや太陽電池パネルなど大面積で軽量な構造物を実現する展開膜面構造，同じ形のモジュールを組み合わせて大型もしくは複雑な構造物を構築するモジュール構造，状況に合わせて形状を変化させる可変形状構造などを対象にした研究に取り組んでいます．また，生物は，自律的で機能的な構造物の実現例とみなすことができます．海洋プランクトン，昆虫や鳥など生物のかたちやしくみの分析し，新たな構造物に活かす工夫もしています．
