Teaching and Research Fields
My specialty is English education and educational psychology, and my final degree is a Master of Arts (Human and Environmental Studies). I am conducting research on two themes to help learners of English as a foreign language effectively improve their English skills: first, self-regulated learning, which has long been studied in educational psychology. We are conducting empirical research based on the cyclical process of self-regulated learning, which consists of forethought (planning), performance (learning execution), and self-reflection (reflecting on performance). My research is unique in that I am pursuing the applicability of a storytelling approach, rather than traditional strategy training, in which English language learners construct their own self-schema through reading stories written in English and change their own learning beliefs and behaviors. Digital storytelling, which has been recognized as an effective educational activity in North America and other Western countries, is one method; the second is an educational approach that quantitatively analyzes small-group English discussions and uses the results to improve English learners' speaking skills. Using a discussion evaluation system that can record and analyze the audio of up to eight participants, we calculate the time spent speaking, the number of turn-taking, and the number of overlaps, and measure changes in English learners' speaking skills over time through classroom practice using the data to quantify the flow of conversation in small groups.
