Teaching and Research Fields
My research focuses on English learners’ use of language to manage goals, norms, and roles within discussion or collaboration groups, both in class and online. This includes how learners use English to (1) maintain peer relationships while making authoritative academic claims and (2) acquire and creatively reuse ideas, conventions, and lexis within and among groups. My second research interest explores development of intercultural communication competence through collaboration. Finally, I study ways to integrate skills-based and content-based language teaching. My teaching incorporates discussion and group work to help students develop as confident second language users in collaborative contexts.
