I am interested in the neural mechanisms that enable animals to act the behaviors in response to specific environmental signals. Insects, in particular, possess excusive abilities of olfactory sensory reception, allowing them to accurately discern environmental context. Pheromones play a crucial role in facilitating efficient communication among conspecifics. While basal insects such as cockroaches engage simple social communication through a few of specie-specific pheromones, more advanced eusocial insects such as termites and ants engage more intricate social communication and their colonies formation through a variety of pheromones. Therefore, I consider that the evolution of pheromones, the receptors, and the neural processing mechanisms with the transition from basal to eusocial insects constitutes a crucial factor in acquisition of advanced social behaviors.
I aim to understand the evolutionary trajectory of insect sociality by examining the evolutionary changes in pheromone reception and its associated processing mechanisms. To achieve this, I plan to approach these questions through the perspectives of both electrophysiology and molecular biology.
