　子どもの第一言語獲得と、成人（おおよそ思春期以降）の第二言語習得を研究しています。
　第一言語獲得については、複雑な文法を子どもが獲得する際に、文脈はどのような役割を果たすのか、といった点を調べるため、子どもの発話データを分析しています。ここでの文脈とは、言語的・非言語的な環境のことです。第一言語獲得がいかに豊かな文脈の中で行われるのかを明らかにすることで、外国語教授法についてもヒントが得られるかもしれません。
　第二言語習得については、特に日本語を母語とする英語学習者が、英語の音や語彙についてどのような知識を持ち、英語をどのように聞いているのかということに興味があります。学習者のいわゆるカタカナ発音は、明らかに日本語の影響を受けたものですが、リスニング中もやはり日本語に影響されるのでしょうか。発音と違って、リスニング中に頭の中で何が起こっているかは、簡単には分かりません。そこで、いろいろな条件で英語音声を提示し、何らかの判断を求める実験を行い、回答のパターンをもとに音声処理について推測します。このような研究の知見から、外国語教授法に対する示唆を得たいと思っています。
