照明、ディスプレイや太陽電池など、光技術は人間社会になくてはならない基盤技術です。従来の光学機器ではレンズやミラーなどの比較的大きい素子を用いて光波が制御されてきましたが、ウェラブルデバイスや自動運転などの新技術への期待が高まるにつれ、軽量・小型・特性可変など、高機能な光学素子が求められています。当研究室では、数ある材料の中でも有機系材料(主に液晶や高分子)に着目し、新しい機能を探求し応用する研究に取り組んでいます。
例えば、液晶は①見た目に透明である(無機材料では難しい)一方で、②分子が秩序性をもっており(機能が現れる)、③外部刺激に応答(制御ができる)します。この独特の特徴はディスプレイに活用されていますが、新しい材料や現象の発見に伴ってAR(拡張現実)機器やセンサ、エネルギーデバイスへの応用も期待されています。新技術の社会実装には新材料や概念の発見、それに基づくデバイス(部材)や応用の提案、デバイスを用いたシステムの開発、そして量産技術開発など多くの要素がありますが、当研究室では材料・概念開発から応用提案を主な立ち位置としつつ、他大学や企業などと共同研究も行いながら研究を進めています。
