我々が立つ大地(大陸地殻)は一体どのように形作られ，どう変化していくのでしょうか．大陸地殻の形成や成長過程に関する議論の歴史は古く，1960年代後半から多くの研究者によって様々なモデルが提唱されています．しかし，それらの議論が収束することはなく，“複雑系”自然科学の巨大な壁に阻まれているのが現状です．私は大陸地殻の形成・成長過程の解明を行うため，花崗岩に注目した研究を行っています．花崗岩は大陸地殻を構成する主要な岩石で，日本において地表の13%を占めています．これらの花崗岩について，地質調査や化学分析を行うことにより，「いつ」「どこで」「なにから」「どうやって」花崗岩を形作るマグマができたのかを探っています．このように各時代・場所での詳細な花崗岩質マグマの成因を解明することで，大陸地殻の形成や成長過程についての解像度を上げ，複雑系自然科学の巨大な壁を壊すべく研究を続けています．
