The pursuit of speaking like a Japanese” is my educational research theme.
Many of the students of Japanese language wanted to be able to speak like Japanese people, so-called “improvement of communication ability in Japanese”. This is because many of them wanted to go on to graduate school and complete their studies. Once they enter graduate school, they will be required to have more and more active communication skills such as presentations and discussions. Therefore, we are thinking about “speaking like a Japanese person”.
This has led me to ask myself, “How does (this person) feel when he/she is speaking now? Why did he/she choose this way of speaking? I have been engaged in research on the speaker's speech intention and mental attitude, focusing on factors such as “pronunciation retention,” “rhythm,” and “intonation. How do listeners feel about the speech, whether the speaker intends it or not, whether they perceive it favorably or unfavorably, what causes the speech of foreign learners of Japanese to be perceived as unfavorable in the first place, and what should we pay attention to in order to avoid being perceived in this way? What are the causes for foreign learners of Japanese to be uncomfortable with their speech in the first place, and what should they pay attention to in order to avoid being perceived in this way?
Our future task is to develop the results of such research into Japanese language classes.
