宇宙には、私たちのいる天の川銀河だけでなく多くの銀河が存在します。銀河の中でいつどのように星が育まれ、現在の姿に進化してきたかを解明するには、宇宙初期の銀河のガスや様々な色の星の分布、中心の巨大ブラックホール、更に銀河が生まれた大局的な環境などを、様々な波長の電磁波で捉える必要があります。特に宇宙で銀河が最も激的に成長したとされる銀河進化最盛期(100-120億年前)の銀河や銀河団、大規模構造をターゲットとし、銀河が環境と共にどのように進化してきたか、すばる望遠鏡などの大型望遠鏡を用いた多波長広視野観測による研究を進めています。
