生物の体を構成し、生命活動に必要な機能を担うタンパク質は、「翻訳」というプロセスによって合成されます。翻訳には、タンパク質を合成する装置のリボソームをはじめ、遺伝情報が記されたmRNA、タンパク質の素材となるアミノ酸を運ぶtRNA、翻訳の開始や終結を制御する因子など、非常に多くのRNAやタンパク質が関わっています。細胞の中では、この複雑な反応が絶えず大量に進行していますが、時として様々なトラブルが発生します。
私は、「いつ・どのような状況で・どんな理由で翻訳のトラブルが起きるのか」、また「生物がそれにどのように対処しているのか」というメカニズムに興味を持ち、研究を進めています。以前はゼブラフィッシュという小型魚類を研究の材料に用いていましたが、動物と植物で全く同じことが起きているのか、あるいは植物では異なるトラブルや対処のメカニズムが存在するのか、という新たな疑問が生じ、現在は植物を研究材料にしています。
さらに、近年提唱されている「Ribosome heterogeneity(リボソームの不均一性)」にも注目しています。この概念は、細胞あたり百万個ほど存在するリボソームは全く同じ顔をした均一の分子ではなく、一つひとつのリボソームが違う構成をしていて、個々が異なる翻訳の特異性(得意・不得意や好き・嫌い)を持つというものです。植物はリボソームを構成する遺伝子の多様性が高いため、Ribosome heterogeneityの研究に適していると考えて、このテーマにも取り組んでいます。
