私たちの住む「地球」はどういう構造をしているのでしょうか？いつ、どういうプロセスでできたのでしょうか？身近にある岩石や鉱物は、それらが経験した歴史を記録した「タイムカプセル」です。黙っていても何も話してくれない石ころですが、分析化学の手法を用いて問いかけてやることにより、そこから情報を引き出すことができるのです。「御影石」の名前で有名な花崗岩は大陸地殻を構成する重要な岩石ですが、その起源や形成過程などはまだ詳しく分かっていません。私はこの花崗岩をターゲットに年代測定や化学分析からその成因を探ってきました。地球は46億年前に誕生してから現在まで絶えず活発に活動を続けています。近年「地球環境」がクローズアップされていますが、「地球の歴史」を明らかにすることは、未来の地球環境を予測することにつながると考えています。
