分子は光励起により様々な化学反応、緩和過程をたどる。特に化学結合の開裂、異性化、電子移動反応、プロトン移動などの化学反応はピコ秒の時間スケールで起こることが多い。私は、このような「超高速現象の化学」をサブピコ秒レーザーを用いた時間分解分光法により研究している。さらにサブマイクロメートル以下の微小領域に閉じ込められた系に特有な化学反応にも焦点を当て、「メゾスコピック領域の化学」の研究も行っている。
