科学技術の社会学は、地球温暖化、開発と環境保全、クローン技術、食の安全、情報化社会、日本の技術力・国際競争力といったさまざまな現象をとりあげ、科学技術と社会のあるべき関係を考えることを課題としています。私がおもに取り組んでいるのは、長良川河口堰や地球温暖化、原発事故による放射線被曝などの環境問題です。これらの問題は、専門家であっても初めから帰結を見とおすのはむずかしく、日々の生活や社会のありかたに大きな影響をおよぼすため、専門家まかせにするわけにはいきません。かといって、私たち全員が十分な知識を身につけて対応していくというのも困難です。それでは、私たちはこうした問題とどう向きあっていくべきでしょうか。社会として意思決定をおこなう際、専門家による判断と民主的な討論はそれぞれどうあるべきで、どういう関係を結ぶべきでしょうか。こうした問いに取り組むのが私の研究課題です。
