My specialization is applied linguistics, particularly second language acquisition (SLA) and third language acquisition (TLA). I am interested in the processes by which L2 and L3 learners acquire their target languages and in the errors they make. In explaining foreign language acquisition, it is necessary to consider two perspectives: universality and diversity. This is because, while there are systems common to language acquisition (universality), individual differences—such as a learner’s first language, L2, and learning environment (diversity)—also play a role.
Because foreign language acquisition is highly complex, it is an interdisciplinary field involving linguistics, information science, psychology, education, sociology, and neuroscience. From a primarily linguistic perspective, I conduct empirical research by collecting and analyzing learner data to investigate what causes learners to make grammatical and usage errors, and how L2 and L3 are acquired as proficiency develops.
Furthermore, in order to uncover the mechanisms of language acquisition, it is essential to examine not only spoken languages but also signed languages. Currently, I am investigating how adult L2 learners of Japanese Sign Language interpret null arguments, comparing their interpretations with those of native Japanese speakers and native signers.
In addition, I collaborate with international researchers and aim to apply the findings from studies on English acquisition by Japanese learners, Japanese as a foreign language, Chinese language acquisition, and bidirectional language acquisition to propose improvements in language teaching practices.
