Daniel Gallimore

Title
Professor
Date of Birth
1966
Research Fields, Keywords
Shakespeare translation and reception in Japan; English literature
Research Outline
I obtained my doctorate at the University of Oxford in 2001 with a thesis on the poetics of Japanese translations of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and follow a range of interests in Shakespeare studies, translation studies, drama and poetics. I began my research in 1997 with the assumption that some kind of equivalence was possible between Shakespeare's English and modern Japanese, but have gradually come to realize that no translation can be a precise equivalent, and that in discussing Japanese translations of Shakespeare, we are limited to discussing 'the art of the possible'. While my thesis emphasized the hermeneutics of translation, for example the way that translators interpret Shakespeare's prosody through their native poetic devices, in my recent essays I have tried to adopt a more historical approach that locates individual translators against their immediate ideological horizons. In recent years, I have concentrated mainly on the work of the early Shakespeare translator Tsubouchi Shoyo (1859-1935), and am also interested in contemporary Shakespeare performance. Other interests include the modern British poet Philip Larkin.
