動物には脳や心臓、皮膚、筋肉など色々な組織があり、これらは様々な種類の細胞が作られています。では、たった一種類の受精卵から、これらの様々な種類の細胞を作るにはどんな、仕組みが必要なのでしょうか。一つの受精卵が分裂し、様々な種類の細胞を作る過程で個々の細胞はそれぞれ違った経験をします。細胞は自分がたどった履歴を記憶する事で、個性を獲得し、その情報に基づいて遺伝子を発現する事で細胞同士の違いを生み出します。
 私は、この細胞の履歴を核に記録し、それに基づいて遺伝子発現を調節するための仕組みを研究しています。この仕組みがある事で、皆さん自身の体の全ての細胞が同じDNAや遺伝子を持っているにもかかわらず、それぞれの細胞は異なるセットの遺伝子を発現し、神経は神経の、表皮は表皮の特性(細胞運命)を維持し続ける事ができるのです。私は、分化した細胞が運命を維持するための仕組みを解き明かすために、モデル生物、線虫C. elegansを用いて遺伝学的なアプローチで研究を進めています。
