「生涯発達心理学」が専門です。なかでも、他者との適度な心理的距離をめぐって生じる“ヤマアラシ・ジレンマ”と呼ばれる現象について、現代青年の友人関係を対象としてそのメカニズムを研究してきました。現在は、この心理現象の生涯にわたる発達的変化の解明へと展開し、アイデンティティ発達のプロセスやライフコースとのかかわりに注目しながら、成人期以降の友人関係でいかにジレンマが発達的変化を遂げていくのかについて研究を進めています。そのほか、医療職や教職を中心とした職業的アイデンティティの発達についても研究テーマとしています。一方、臨床心理士であることから、中学校でのスクールカウンセラーとしての臨床経験があるほか、現職研修や講演会など積極的に社会的活動を行っています。
