人は、死を意識することで、いかに生きるかを考える。また、生きることの苦しみから、死について考える。このように生と死は切り離すことのできない一体である。死生学を「死を含めて生きることを考える学問」と捉え、スピリチュアリティを含めた「全人」としての人の在り方（エンド・オブ・ライフケケア、喪失と悲嘆、自殺、安楽死、生殖医療等）を研究している。また、「生と死」「いのちの問題」を一人称（自身）の問題と捉え、自らのいのち、他者との共生に向き合うためのデス・エデュケーションを実践している。
